Sheer Heart Attack Tour (30.10.1974 - 01.05.1975)
Several new songs (most of them piano-based) were added but Freddie still
didn't own any piano (although he already was thinking of buying one). Now that the band was averagely famous, they could
improve their equipment. John had new sets of amplifiers from this tour onwards.
Percussion
Ludwig drum kit: 26" x 14" Bass Drum, 13" x 19" and 14" x 14" Rack Toms, 16" x 16" and 18" x 16" Floor Toms, 15" Zildjian
Hi-Hats, 20" Zildjian Crash, 18" Paiste & Zildjian Crash, 22" Zildjian Ride, 14" x 15" Snare. Ludwig Cowbells were mixed
in the kit for Liar. The bass drum logo was still the black crest on a white background.
During some numbers Freddie
played a New Era tambourine and John hit a triangle (probably Ludwig too) in Killer Queen.

A Night At The Opera Tour
(14.11.1975 - 22.04.1976) After the recordings of
the album a brand new set of songs and instruments was about to be presented. John's basses were the same although he stripped
the paint off them and left them natural. For the UK tour Freddie hired a piano but for the world tour he just played what
he was supplied with. Very soon that habit would radically change.

A Day At The Races - "Rehearsals" (01.09.1976 - 18.09.1976)
This short tour included some important additions in the band's
equipment. They were in the middle of the 'A Day At The Races' recordings (the two new songs, Tie Your Mother Down and You
Take My Breath Away, hadn't been laid down in the studio yet). For the first time ever the band played an acoustic number
in which Roger played tambourine as well.
Percussion
Tambourines were New Era (Freddie) and Ludwig (Roger). Roger played New Era
and Ludwig cowbells and a Paiste gong. John hit a Ludwig triangle in Killer Queen.
The drumkit Roger used here
was the biggest he ever had. He had added two really small toms/gongs (6" and 8") with a 8" Paiste splash cymbal attached
to them. Then a mounted tom line of 10", 14" and 16" (the top toms) and the floor toms (18" and 20"). Then two more mounted
toms (approx. 12" and 13") or some form of percussion were attached above the floor toms as well! The china (22") cymbals
were new to the set. The bass drum logo was still the white crest on a black background. |
